As you all know by now we will once again be holding our biennial "OK" row on the weekend of the 8th and 9th of October. This is a row from Oxford city boat club all the way back to Teddington lock (O-K, Oxford to Kingston). The event is a great oppourtunity for all the club to get to know one another better and enjoy the great scenary and stretches of water that the thames has to offer, as well as raising much needed funds for our boatclub. The row will involve:
- 144 KM
- 60 rowers
- 31 locks
- 7 stops
- 6 quads
- 2 buses
and one common aim: to have fun.

We hope that by now all competant rowers will have signed up and begun fundraising. We would appreciate if everyone set themselves a target of £75. Although this may seem like a large figure if you get a little from a lot of people it will add up! Our top fundraiser last time raised around £600, so the competition is on!
As well as supporting out club in our endeavour to buy new boats to allow everyone a fair opportunity on the water, we will also be making a very substantial donation to a local charity which supports people with ME. For infromation on the disease please follow this link to the ME association:

HENLEY ROYAL REGATTA 2011

The qualifying races for Henley took place last Friday 24th June. The school quad of Aaron Moran,Jack Claydon, Richard Clarke and Joel Nulson were flying the flag for TSBC. They had trained hardand having put in a strong and impressive performance at Marlow International the previousweekend were feeling confident.

The Fawley Cup is a popular event at Henley for junior quads so this year the fastest 8 crews outof the 61 entries were to qualify. It wasn’t the best of conditions with the rain persistent but theylooked strong along the 2112 metre course.

The results came and disappointment was written on all their faces. They came 18th out of 61which was a fantastic result given the stature of the crews from around the world competing. Theycan be nothing but proud of their achievements as they have certainly put TSBC out there as aserious contender.

Tiffin Boat Club on a Cake

A very big thank you to all those who helped to bake, sell, buy and eat all the lovely cakes at Saturday's Kingston Head. We sold a staggering £270 worth!

All boys raced well putting out good performances across the board. Training and hard work throughout the winter season all showed through the 5 kilometre course the signalled the last head race of the year. A win in the J18 quad came with help from Sam McArdle's extra length on this occasion, subbing in for Jack, and the consistency Joel, Aaron and Greg have shown throughout the year was apparent. The J14 quad have been adamant that success in Tiffin Schools rowing does not have to come through the older years and picked themselves up a pot each for winning their category with outstanding rowing from Tom, Harris, Alberico, Hasan and coxed by Dudley. Tiffin go into their training camp on good form in preparation for the up and coming regatta season!

CAKE SALE

We are planning to run a cake sale at the Kingston head on Saturday 26th March.

If you are able to help in any way. either on the stall or by baking cakes or biscuits that would be fantastic. Just let me know approx what times you can be there and we can set up a rota.
If cakes could be cut and wrapped in a saleable slice, that would help, and can be brought along in the morning or if easier can be brought to me on the Friday. Don’t forget to label any boxes that you want returning.

NANTES!

Every year, the GB junior squad hold a training camp in Nantes. After performing well at trials and winning Hampton Head, beating Windsor boys, a seat on the coach was reserved for me this year.
The week consisted of two sessions a day, and when the river froze over on day four, like amphibious ghouls, drained of any energy we once had, we took to the land for training. After two days on the water, racking up around 75 kilometres on the water, we were set a 30 minute test on the ergo. Naturally I took the corner erg, not wanting to show anyone else up. I expected to be somewhere near the back of the group, however I managed to break my PB by a fair margin, impressing the coaches in the process.
A great thing about doing a camp such as this is getting to know everyone, most of them I will be rowing with nearer the end of the year when they are looking at crew boats for the championships.
Last year all but two rowers that went to Nantes ended up competing for GB at the end of the year. Hopefully successful results at Trials on the 19th and 20th February will leave me in good stead for the World Championships held this year at Dorney Lake, Eton (some second rate school near Windsor). Obviously it’s a bit early to be buying tickets but if everything goes to plan, I’d like to think I have what it takes.

J16 update from Guy and Ed

Taking inspiration from Take That (Dai Rai’s favourite band), the Charlie, Neil, Guy and Sahib jumped in their multicultural quad and knuckled down to proverbial business. Under the iron fist and square blades of Miss Ferraro, the J16s were metaphorically whipped into shape. Miss Ferraro’s strong leadership had an immediate effect with Ed Hale picking up two pots early in the season at Kingston and Teddington while the quad posted up great times in the senior events. We were given strict orders from the top to stay fit over Christmas and not to become festively plump on pain of death.

Over Christmas while everyone was gorging themselves with mince pies and roast turkey, Ed was training relentlessly. Unfortunately for him, he chose skiing and due to his vulnerability to injury, his knee broke like a Lib-Dem promise. Leaving him hospitalised and forced to spend his days in misery playing halo, while being tormented at the thought of being incapable to train. Meanwhile the quad was lucky enough to have the privileges of training in sub zero temperatures and the skin piercing rain. The quad is looking forward to kicking the competition in their bow balls at Hampton Head. Prepare to have your new boatclub socks thoroughly rocked off!

The Marlow Thames Valley Trial Head

CONGRATULATIONS to Richard Clarke who had a successful day at Thames Valley Trials head on Sunday. With his doubles partner Tom Eames from Tideway Scullers. Their time over the 1900m course was 7.06:25 beating second place by 10 seconds.

In the afternoon they were joined by Harry Lonergan and James Rudkin, also from Tideway, to win the J18 4x and with a time of 6.35:36, beat Windsor boys quad to the line by 7 seconds. Not only did they win the category and another medal but they also clocked up the fastest time of the day.

Training with World Class Start – Anna Porteus TSBC

Recently, I have been training at Molesey Boat Club under the watchful eye of Neasa Folan, who is an incredibly successful coach, having led numerous crews to victories at all abilities from club to international level.

Since being at Molesey, there has been a definite increase in the intensity of my programme and I am currently training 9 times a week. Having learnt lots of new aspects of the sport I never even knew existed before I feel I have progressed into a more competent rower.

With 7 World Class Start camps a year in Nottingham, these are times when you are required to perform, preparing you for the intensity needed at GB level and I feel that with every session undertaken, I am one step closer to achieving my aim of representing my country.

Walton Small Boats Head

This weekend saw our last race of the term, Walton Small Boats. This was a great event for participation, with 35 scullers racing in 24 boats.
Although their was a lack of wins at this event, many participants still achieved some great results, including;
- Richard Clarke, who came a very close 2nd in J17 singles
- Isaac Jarratt-Barnham who came 2nd in J15 Singles
- Jack Claydon and Joel Nulson coming 2nd in J18 Doubles (A fantastic result for their first race together)
- Harris Robinson and Tom Hodson who also achieved 2nd in J14 doubles.
Mentions should also go to; Charlie Harrisson and Guy Thompson, Elliot Salmon and Jonothan Williams, Jack Pearce, Michael Morris and Shane Dunne, Sam McArdle and Nathan Holt, Sahib Sidhu and Neil Patel. All of whom achieved top 5 placings in their categories.
Well done to all who raced, with a well earned break and lots of training over this holiday we all look forward to another successful term in Spring.

Fours head

The Tiffin quad including Jack Claydon, Greg Street, Jonathan Williams and Joel Nulsen came 25th in their category, however were disqualified for an undeclared substitute which Tiffin are currently appealing. Richard Clarke in a Tideway/Stowe/Tiffin composite came 5th, only 0.6 seconds behind Yarm in 4th place, a very respectable position.

Provisional timetable of races for November:

6th - Teddington head

14th - Fours head

Down on the Tideway, crews race 7k from Chiswick bridge to Putney. This year Tiffin have entered a Junior 4x in a category with a phenomenal 41 entries, the quad includes Jack Claydon, Greg Street, Aaron Moran (injured) and Joel Nulsen. Richard Clarke is entering a composite quad of Tideway Scullers/Tiffin Sch/Stowe. Both crews are hoping for a respectable position.

20th - Kingston small boats head/ GB trials in Boston

Kingston has a wide range of junior entries where Tiffin try as hard as possible to win as many pots as possible, whilst hopefully beating their times at Teddington. Meanwhile Richard Clarke and Tim Livingstone will be racing in Boston in singles in the 2nd stage of GB Junior trials.

27th - Hampton small boats head

A junior event which proved highly prestigious last year with over 100 entries in J16 singles alone. It's a good chance to see how crews fair against scullers coming back from GB trials the week before.

Teddington Head

The first race of the season for Tiffin scullers was Teddington head on 6th November where Tiffin swept up 7 wins across the two divisions, setting us up very nicely for a good season. This goes to show how much effort everyone put in over training camp and how it has paid off.

Wins came courtesy of Nathan & Sam in J18 doubles, beating Charles & Josh for the pot. George & Johno raced IM3 double to beat Tiffin associates. J14 double of Harris and Tom won their category by a long way, overtaking 6 crews on the way down. In the singles, Richard won J18 category by over a minute to be the fastest sculler of the day. Ed won his J16 category by a long margin with a very good time clocking under 20 minutes. Both J15 singles posted very respectable times and this race gave Isaac the win over quad companion Jack P. Darcey raced well with a time of 23.40 obviously everyone was scared off as she was the only competitor in her category.

Well done to Will, Dairui and Guy who all posted times within 5 seconds of each other, proving good competition. Just behind them was the J15 girls double and just behind them was Seb and Jack B in their double. Also well done to the other J15 double of Jack H and Elias who came second to an on form Kingston double.

Everyone put in a good performance and set a time to beat in 2 weeks time when they will row the same course at Kingston small boats head.

Waitrose 'local good causes' scheme

Tiffin Boat Club is one of the 3 'local good causes' in Waitrose, Kingston for the month of September. This means at the checkout you will get a green token which you then place in the box of the cause you wish to support (obviously Tiffin Schools Boat Club). Then the more tokens the cause gets in relation to the other causes, the bigger percentage of the £1000 monthly donation we receive. Hopefully meaning we will be able to get the landing stage!
So if you're shopping in Waitrose Kingston in September if you wouldn't mind dropping the token in the Tiffin box it would be much appreciated, Thank you.

I thought I'd make a general notice covering some rowing terminology for parents as mine are still muddling up doubles and pairs.

The age group comes first and it's predominantly done in school years. the number is the maximum age of the rower in that year so someone may be 14 yet rowing as a J15 as they are in year 10.
J14 - year 9
J15 - year 10
J16 - year 11
J17 - lower sixth
J18 - upper sixth
Most of the time they will merge lower and upper sixth together under the category J which stands for Junior. Anyone can row in a category above them (i.e. a J14 rowing as J16) but you're not allowed to go down a year.

If entered at adult level a points system occurs making things harder. One win at adult level (not a J category) and it is one point. 1 pot, 1 point.

N - Novice - you cannot enter with 1 point

IM3 - Intermediate 3 - you cannot enter with 3 points

IM2 - Intermediate 2 - you cannot enter with 5 points

IM2 - Intermediate 1 - you cannot enter with 7 points

S - Senior - you cannot enter with 10 points

E - Elite - no limit

House Regatta

As of every year with house regatta there was a a great spirit on a hot day. This house regatta had a few changes involved. This year saw girls involved in house regatta. It also saw J12s involved in their own division over a division racing over 250m. I apologise if I am seen to be taking sides as my house is the magnificent Scott.

We always talk about how great the integration with the girls school has been this year but to really show it within the boatclub the first girls pot EVER was handed out this year to Anna Porteous. Coxing the Senior quad winners, Scott, to a great win. This victory also marked the end of a 5 year domination for George and (big) Jonny for Scott in the quads category, as they are leaving this year they got the victory they deserved, which continued into the Senior singles, Jonny winning the 'A' category, and George winning the 'B'. However I realise it would be a little unfair just to mention the winners. Myles, always a great laugh, turned up to beat Daniel Teh in the first round and came 2nd to Jonny in the Final. Third place in that race was Mo Farwana, which in all honesty no one expected, we hope Mo will continue his rowing into sixth form. The 'B' event saw Sam McArdle beat Joel Nulsen for 2nd position, proving that it'll be tough competition at the start of next year.

To the Juniors. Where the quads raced with great skill in the final for Scott to just pip Raleigh. The junior singles was won by Ed Hale of Scott. Although the battle for second place saw Elliot Salmon come from behind after his trademark "my start wasn't very good" and beat Sahib to the line by a whisker. This again will provide an excellent challenge to form crews next year. The 'B' category was won by Raleigh, Charlie Harrison. The J15s have a great squad moving into next year where the game really steps up.

IMPORTANT!!!!!!

The end of house regatta saw Captain of boats announced which will not be easy for the coming year. However I believe that the right man has been chosen in the form of GREG STREET, well done

Kingston Regatta

A huge thank you to the mass support Tiffin received on both days. As I reached the enclosure and the shouting began it gave me the boost I needed to sprint the final 250m. If this continues into next year the crews will be delighted. Everybody gains confidence when they hear support for them.

As a brief round up to the weekend, Tiffin won three events, J12 doubles, J18 singles and J15+ quads so well done to those who gained a pot (in total 2 more victories than KGS).

Well done to all of the crews racing, there are too many to name and out of fear of forgetting one I won't list. We achieved countless wins in the heats and semis to reach the final many times only to be knocked out by a narrow margin. The unfortunate people who experienced this were; Anna in the WJ15 singles, Ed in the J15 singles, the other J12 double, Richard in the IM3 singles and the J14 A quad of Isaac, Jack P, Elias and Jack H, coxed by Thadius. These were absolutely fantastic results for many crews that have not raced much and so all should be proud!

My special mention goes to the J14 girls who raced. I was pleased to be able to cheer on the first J14 Tiffin girls doubles who rowed extremely well and I think that if they continue as they are, a win next year is almost definite. Huge congratulations to Gillian and Anika, Beni and Darcey for their great efforts and training recently. They shouldn’t be the only ones next year so hopefully we’ll have lots of girl crews racing at Kingston Regatta for the Tiffin Schools Boat Club!

To conclude, a massive well done to all people that raced; all winners, finalists and those that didn’t reach that far. It was a great 2 days with fantastic support from friends, parents and members of the club. Let’s keep up the good work going into the winter season and see how many pots we can add to our collections!!!

Henley Royal Regatta

This event is the pinnacle of the year, with the best crews internationally competing for a title in the historic event. Tiffin participated in the quad divisions this year. Entering the senior quad in the Prince of Wales, for university and club crews. Also entering the school boys quad in Fawley, for under 19s into the qualifiers, held the Friday before the regatta begins.

Both crews are relatively new together but all hopes were high during training. The Senior quad had to be within the top 5 of the 15 wanting to qualify. After an intense 2112m race, they were 2 seconds off the pace and finished 9th in an event eventually won by Leander. The junior quad had their work cut out as 9 qualified out of 41. Unfortunately they were up against huge crews who had been together for the year, where as we were in our 2nd week of training together. A brave effort put them 29th. With a crew that can enter again next year.

Everyone had a great time watching and we hope that we can qualify next year as the regatta itself is a spectacle.

The Senior composite quad of James Hanson, George Nottidge, Michael Hannaford & Chris Ellam won Senior quad sculls at Marlow this weekend - they led from the start and completed the course in a time of 3.02.99 - well done boys!

Meanwhile this Friday is Henley qualifiers and TSBC has the Prince of Wales quad entered (as above) plus a Fawley Challenge quad consisting of Joel Nulson, Greg Street, Richard Clarke & Johnny Williams. That's 4 days to qualifiers and counting!

Met And Marlow

A composite crew of Tiffin/Henley/Kingston raced in Elite and Senior Quads on both days of the Metropolitan Regatta at Dorney Lake last week. They did not make it through the semis of Elite on either day, suffering with the pace caused by the older senior crews, racing a TSS boat in their sunday semi-final containing ex-Olympians and Boat race stars.

The crew did however finish a creditable 4th in Senior Quads on Sunday, putting together their best row of the weekend. The crew of Michael Hannaford, James Hanson, Chris Ellam and George Nottidge will race next at Marlow Regatta, again at Dorney, this weekend.

Barnes and Mortlake regatta

On Saturday we approached the middle of the Tiffin Boat Club regatta campaign. Barnes and Mortlake. Held on the same stretch as Chiswick regatta, crews raced hard over 1000m with the stream with the chance to win a pint tankard.

The J14s are looking to be a huge prospect of the future thanks to their dedication and their coaching under Jonathan Williams. They picked up a win in their B quad, showing that Westminster can in fact be beaten! Their A quad showed a lot of endurance when their final was called a dead heat they rowed back to the start and raced a strong Dulwich crew for a second time, and although it looked too close to call gain, unfortunately the win went Dulwich's way. And not to be forgotten, Jack, for bravely taking on the tideway in his single but unfortunately not managing to make it through.

The J15 singles look to be getting better as Elliot won his first race and almost made the final in a closely fought race. Unlucky to Ben and commiserations to Declan who battled and lost to a giant. The J15 quad made up of Guy, Neil, Anna, Sahib and Aaron coxing beat 2 London Oratory quads to win their division, just proving the standard the whole crew is at and the success for Anna continued in her single, winning another pot.

The J16s have had a successful regatta season so far with and this continued. The double of Will and Dai Rui beat Globe in the semi and met Matt and Daniel in a Tiffin vs Tiffin final. No one on the side could call it but The judge's verdict was 3 feet to Will and Dai Rui, winning their first pots. Richard proved a point that brute power can still win a race at J16 level, clocking in at rate 22 in his straight final. Making a total of 14 pots and 5 wins for Tiffin out of 8. Well done!

World Class Start

Anna Porteous has been selected to take part in Great Britain's World Class Start program at Molesy Boat Club. The world class start program is a talent ID program with lottery funding, aiming to identify and develop future olympians.

3 female Olympians in Beijing came through the program, and more featured in the 2009 world championships and recent Bled world cup events. No pressure Anna!

National Schools

Thanks to everyone for their efforts over the 3 days of National Schools whether it be in competing, supporting or driving - all much appreciated!

I have attached a file which gives details of each of the events in which Tiffin were represented, qualifying times, semi times and final times. You will see from this that there are some real peculiarities in terms of heat times v semi times and in some cases final times and particularly on the last day - the impact of the extreme cross head wind is evident.

The j14's beat Dulwich, Kings Canterbury, Bedford Modern & Kings Wimbledon, but while they did not qualify for the next round will be hopeful of doing better next year.
Anna's competed in girls singles, the first Tiffin girl to represent the school at the championships.
After all of 3 weeks in a single Eds qualification in J15 singles was impressive, making the semi-finals.
The J16 quad came 6th out of 12 qualifiers in what everyone agrees was not their best performance, and will travel back to Nottingham for the GB vs France race off.
J15 quad had one of their best rows, against what were described as "scarily big" opposition, and will hope for a growth spurt in-between now and next may!
Richards J16 single qualified whilst under rating most other competitors........he then became a victim of the extreme cross head wind.
Champ quads - qualified with three J17's in the boat, though the cross head and some classy opposition made staying in the race a tall order.

The final sculler of the day was Jonathan in Champ 1x, probably the hardest event at the regatta. He raced very well in the time trial and then won his semi to reach the final which was stacked with scullers who were in previous GB teams and certainly will be in this year's team. In the final the first four scullers were within four seconds of each other in an excellent race. Jonathan was disappointed not to win, but this was a great fighting result in the last five hundred metres and he collects an excellent bronze medal.
Myles, racing for Molesy Boat Club, earned a silver medal in Championship 2- being rolled over in the last 500m by an excellent pair from Maidenhead.

Thames Ditton Regatta

Tiffin saw a number of crews race the 1000m upstream course of Thames Ditton on 15th May. It was great to see so much support for the boat club all throughout the day, helping keep spirits high. This is an event that Tiffin compete highly in every year, and this year was no exception.

Special mentions go to Geroge Nottidge, for winning the Novice singles fairly comfortably. And also for winning the Junior doubles with Jonathan Williams, narrowly beating the second double of Aaron and Greg in a Tiffin Vs Tiffin final.

The J15s put out a number of singles, all competing and racing well through the rough conditions. Neil, Elliot, Ben, Ed and Charlie all put in their best efforts and Ed raced well to get to the semis putting in an extra spurt only to lose out by 1.75L.

The J14 quad reached the 'A' final of their event winning their first race easily. They then went on to race the final after Isaac and Jack competed in the singles as well.

The J16 four lost to a highly competitive KGS four on their stretch of river. The quad from the same year won their semi comfortably with a fantastic time, but couldn't hold their form for the final. Richard raced in the singles losing out to his pairs partner in the semis. Overall good preparation for National Schools on 28th.

A thank you to all those who raced and supported making the day go smoothly, we hope to see you all in regattas to come.

A very big well done to everyone for the effort put in on Saturday at Chiswick. The overall performance was undoubtedly an improvement on last year and bodes well for the rest of the summer season.

Congratulations to the winners, namely:

Richard (J16 1x)
J16 quad (Nathan, Jack, Richard & Joel)......

Also a very big well done to all competitors who performed outstandingly well in the heats against some strong opposition.

Especially:

The J17 double of Greg & Arran competing at J18 against some larger than life opposition & coming 2nd
The J16 double of Will & Dai Rui who looked very competitive post Bosbaan
The novice double of George and Eddie who will be racing at IM3 at Thames Ditton!
Johnnie Williams the younger, again putting in a strong performance in his single at J18 whilst still a J17
The 3 J15 scullers of Ed Hale, Ben Whitfield and Elliot Salmon who all showed a competitive attitude delt with the tough conditions at the end of the day to perform well in the heats, especially Ed who made it through to the final and came second
Last but by no means least, the 2 J14 quads who effectively went out as scratch given illness and put in fight whilst having a big learning experience.

Finaly please thank all parents and supporters who came along to watch - their support was much appreciated.

Busy

It's been a crowded few weeks for the Boat Club, but we seem to have made it through with out any major scares (Shahrukh's trip to dove pier below Hammersmith bridge non-withstanding!). The Schools Head, National Junior Sculling Head, NJIRC and Kingston Head have rounded out an extremely busy winter racing season, and I think for now everyone is glad!

Results at the Schools Head and National Junior Sculling Head were mixed. The senior squad, hampered by illness and injury, lined up with two completely different scratch crews at the back-to-back events. The juniors had better luck, with good results for the J15 boys and girls and a promising 6th from a below strength J16 quad!

Tiffins first entry to the Nat' Junior Indoor Rowing Champs' at Battersea was also a success. Richard Clarke (J16) and Tim Livingston (J14) picked up bronze medals, while Jon Williams pulled an incredible 6.19 2K to take silver in the J18 event. Tiffin Girls also turned out in force, with 7 (?) entrants.

Kingston Head yesterday proved a fitting end to a turbulent winter however, with the J18 4x (Jonathan, Arran, Josh, Greg) winning their event! The "experimental" J16 8+ put out it's first ever race against tough opposition, and can only get better. To round it off, a time only crew 4x consisting of George, Alex, James H and Michael H won the second division by a convincing 40 second margin, prompting the succinct conclusion from the line judge of; "bl**dy hell!" Altogether, strong rowing from all boys and girls, and thanks to everyone who has turned out over the last few months to race, support or coach. We can't do it without you!

Car Boot Sale + Quiz 2010

We had the first car boot sale on the school grounds on Saturday, making just over £1000 for the club! A massive thanks to all the teachers, parents and boys who turned up and did such a fantastic job at a crucial fundraising event. The next car boot sale is on Easter Sunday, and we can hope to make more money considering Saturday's sale was marred by rain.

Also, the TSBC quiz is on the 26th of March so keep that date free.

I have just begun my second term of rowing at Robinson College Cambridge. I have already built up a reputation as 'the best rower in college' and 'making everyone else look bad'. Putting aside the fact that the majority of my team-mates only took up the sport 4 months ago, it is safe to assume that the experience I gained from my rowing at Tiffin has put me in good stead!

In recent years the College has not taken much silverware. This year, however things are looking to change. Along with my experience we have one of the lightweight coaches in our boat as well as a Canadian third year exchange who has experience and enthusiasm.

Because of the narrowness of the river Cam the traditional races between colleges at the University are "bumps", multiple "head" style races taking place over 4 consecutive days, where the only aim is to catch the preceding crew. If you achieve the "bump", you take that crews place in the starting order the next day, hoping to get to the "head" of the race.

The goal at the moment is to achieve 'blades' at the bumps racing at the end of both this term and the next. This means 'bumping' or overtaking a crew on each of the 4 days of racing.

Aside from racing, one of the great aspects of College Rowing is the social side. I now have several friends in second and third years, even a few postgraduates. Friends I wouldn't have, had I not been rowing. The balance between work and trainings has also been fine. I managed to get a first in our end of term test and have managed to keep on top of things all term long. I think rowing at Tiffin provided me with the organization skills necessary to make this possible.

Kingston Rowing Club Annual Dinner

On Saturday evening, both myself and George were invited to the Kingston Rowing Club dinner in Surbiton. We share our boat house with Kingston, a founding member of Remenham Club and one of the oldest rowing clubs in the world with a rich history stretching back over 150 years.

With a chance to rub shoulders with old Tiffinians who had rowed for the club, and to finally match a face to the eponymous name of David Biddulph, the evening was a massive success for the club and a testament to the strength of their members in their drive to put the club back on the map.

So, while they still may be a little bitter over their defeat to us at the HORR last year we can look forward to brushing shoulders and competing against each other on the river for many years to come.

Hampton Head - RESULTS

Not our best set of results from Hampton, but there were a few highlights over the weekend.

Ellie and Alice battled bravely over the course in their first outing in this combination since the Henley training weekend, and were the only girls crew representing Tiffin in the race. The Senior 4x were pushed into 6th place (separated from 2nd by just over 7 seconds) after only three sessions with each other and Richard's knees held together by only pritt-stick and duct tape. Jon Williams however proved unstoppable in the J18 single, ripping the field apart to win by 10 seconds!

After a long winter break, it was good to be back racing again. Now we are back at Kingston after an eventful couple of weeks on the Tideway, we can start to work the miles we have been denied by the conditions.

Our next race is School's Head and the National Junior Sculling Head over the 11th and 12th of March, followed by Kingston Head on the 20th.

Also, a big thank-you to everyone who turned out to cheer on the school on Saturday including the Head teacher!

Hampton Head

The stream has appeared to have died down over the last few days, allowing us to retreat from the bumpy water in Putney and return to Kingston. Also it now looks like Hampton should be going ahead this weekend.

Those racing in Division 1, meet at 8am. Those in division 2 meet 10am. The trailer will be parked on Saddler's Rise near to the finish line.

Easter Training Camp

This year we are on training camp in Holland, on the Bosbaan rowing lake which hosts the KNRB Olympic Rowing Team. The Bosbaan is the oldest artificial rowing lake in the world, containing 8 lanes and a 5km running track around the outside. It will also be hosting the World Rowing Championships in 2014.

We will be leaving on the 11th of April and arriving home on the 18th. We are travelling there via minibus and train, with the group convening for the overnight ferry to Holland. As usual, details to follow regarding more specific times.

Places on the trip will be allocated based upon training and racing performances, and rowers from all year groups will have the opportunity to attend.

Stewart West

Stewart West was the Captain of Boats at Tiffin in 2007-2008 season. Having joined the school in 2006, he instantly integrated himself into the squad and stroked the 1st eight at the SHORR and at Henley Royal Regatta. Stewart is currently studying at the Durham University, in the second year of his course. Here, he describes his experience of rowing so far at University;

"I have just started my second year at Durham University and have already had many great rowing experiences! My very first race for Durham was the British Universities Small Boats Championships, where I picked up a medal in the lightweight pair. Since then I have been fotunate enough to have started in the top 25 at the Head of the River, as the bowman of Durham 2nd Eight, and also picked up the university’s only men's gold medal at the British Universities Championships! At the end of last season I also rowed in the Visitors at Henley Royal Regatta and won a bronze medal at the National Championships in the lightweight coxless four.

"This season I have seen my performances go from strength to strength, and feel confident ahead of the new season. I have recently pulled a new 8 second PB at the first set of GB Trials (6:38.3) on the ergo, and picked up medals at BUCS Head. For the rest of the season the plan is to concentrate on developing a lightweight 8 and target the top 50 at the Head of the River. My long term goal is for the boat to qualify for the European Universities Championships in August!"

First Week Back...

Not surprisingly the river is very red at the moment, if it is still red next week when school starts we will need to de-camp to Putney for wednesday and thursday, we wont have time to get boats loaded and get there for Monday. Please come to school prepared.

There are still strong stream warnings all the way up the Thames this week, and look set to continue for the foreseeable future. As a result, we are loading the trailer and traveling down to Vesta in order to spend some time on the water. Training at Putney begins this Wednesday (9th).

There is no school this Tuesday (8th) due to the 11+, so don't come on site to use the gym as you will be turned away. Do either a 60 minute run, cycle or swim.

TSBC Dinner

Friday night was the first annual Boat Club dinner. Starting at 7.30, there was a bit of confusion as we realised that we had 20 more guests than chairs for them to sit on! But, despite the calamitous start, some hard work from both students and staff meant that evening ran incredibly smoothly for what is only a fledgling event.

We would like to thank our guest speaker, Richard Boulton, our President, John King, as well as our Headmistress, Hilda Clarke, for their support of the event and of the Boat Club.

Also, a massive thank-you from the boys to all the people who made the event happen. Pauline, Vincent, Miso, Carol, Dave, Jeeves, Ms. Ferraro and many more!

Hell And High Water

The red boards have been up all week, and as a result our outings have been extremely limited this week. Yesterday, training with part of the squad from Kingston University, we completed the "rowing triathlon" consisting of circuit training, erging and running.

Hampton Small Boats Head

This weekend, Tiffin travelled to Molesy in search of better weather and raced in the Hampton Small Boats Head. With junior early identification trials cancelled the previous weekend, the countries top scullers were out in force. Tiffin fielded 24 crews over 2 divisions in a mixture of singles, doubles and (J15) quads.

Tiffin won two prizes on the day, Alex winning Junior Novice singles, and Richard coming second in J16 singles. Special mention goes to George, Alex, Arran, Jack and Richard for racing twice.

This Saturday (21st) is the Kingston Small Boats Head. We have 17 entries in the race, meaning that Tiffin will be represented by a staggering 42 individuals out on the river!

The Headteacher will also be attending the race, and is keen to see how we get on in our first full race as a boatclub this season!

Fours Head

Despite the weather forecast signaling gale force winds and heavy rain, Tiffin set out for the tideway on the 14th of November. The Four's Head Of The River is held on the championship course from Mortlake to Putney, a 7.5 km race. Unfortunately, it soon became clear that conditions were not favorable, and the race was abandoned at 12.30 as the water whipped up and became un-rowable around Hammersmith. TSBC will be back next year for (hopefully) better weather! Thanks to Carol Cornell and Kristina Ferraro for all their help on the day, and Vesta Rowing Club for their hospitality.

Tiffin's crew consisted of Alex Thomas, Eddie Rolls, Arran Mornin and Jono Williams. Jonathan Williams (sr.) was racing in IM1 4x for Tideway Scullers School.
